The current coop is 8 x 12, and comfortably houses 40 birds.
The Exterior
Elevated 2 feet off the ground, the birds have a shady spot to hang out in during the hot days. Pests are somewhat deterred because climbing is the only way to gain entry into the coop. Each side of the coop houses a nesting area with 4 boxes each, as well as 2 windows. The front has a double door clean-out section, chicken pop door, and a top mounted window.
Entry and exit for the chooks is provided via a ramp off the pop door. The ramp has rubber horse stall mat attached to provide traction.
A walk-in door with a built-in window is at the rear of the structure. Steps lead up to the walk-in door.
Water is continuously supplied directly from the well and the setup requires minimal cleaning because it is enclosed.
Security is of utmost importance, though this may be overkill.
The Interior
4 roosting bars supply ample room without overcrowding.
The pop door is controlled by a homemade solar charged timing setup.
Indoor/outdoor carpet lines the roll away nesting boxes.
Things are kept cool during the day by a solar powered fan attached to the window in the walk-in door.
Though satisfied with the current setup, there is always room for improvement. Painting would be 1 of them.
